Want Better Overall Health? Get Rid of Tension First

Tension and stress go hand in hand.Simply put, tension is a physical reaction to stress. The name speaks for itself, causing your body to “tense up.”

Some people feel the tension in their shoulders or neck. Others may get tension headaches. It’s all a result of high levels of stress. When your body is under a lot of stress, it becomes tense to protect itself.

While occasional tension isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it can affect your health if it becomes too frequent.

Because tension is associated with stress, feeling it too often can create lasting health issues. This includes concerns such as high blood pressure, heart problems, or even diabetes.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to lower your stress and get rid of tension.

Release the Tension in Your Body

Sometimes, we can become so used to stress and tension that we don’t even realize how much it affects us. To remedy this, try being more aware of your bodily responses to situations.

Specifically, focus on your muscles. How do they feel? If they’re contracted and tight, you might be dealing with tension.

As you can imagine, it’s important to release it.

Releasing that tension in your body can be as simple as taking a few deep breaths, stretching out, meditating, or getting a massage. Do whatever you need to release the tension from your muscles, so you can fully start to relax.

Change Your Thinking

Often, we let negative thoughts build up in our heads about different situations in life.

Take note of those thoughts, and try to turn them into positive ones. Letting negative thoughts take over your mind will greatly increase your stress levels and cause additional tension.

It’s not always easy to think positively. But, acknowledging your negative thoughts and considering how you might be able to flip them can make a big difference.

Let Out Your Stress

It’s easy for us to feel stressed out because of other people.

We bottle up our emotions and don’t tell those individuals how we feel or why they’re causing it. Unfortunately, that only makes matters worse.

It might require a couple of uncomfortable conversations, but don’t be afraid to talk to someone if they’re causing stress in your life. You don’t need to be upset or angry – just honest!

Keeping your feelings bottled up inside could impact how tense you feel. Expressing your feelings can help to release the tension.

Work it Out

If tension is causing you physical and mental anguish, try to leave the stressful situation.

For example, go for a brisk walk. Even a 5-10 minute walk can help to release tension from your mind and body.

Also, consider adopting a regular exercise regime. Not only will it improve your general health, but it’s a great way to release tension from your body and let your mind drift elsewhere for a while.

Tension isn’t something that should be ignored. As a society, we’re more stressed than ever. But, that doesn’t make it normal. Or, healthy!
